Built only for the 2020–2022 model years, the S550-generation Shelby GT500 was Ford Performance’s apex Mustang of the period. Developed under Carl Widmann, it married a supercharged V8 to the first dual‑clutch transmission ever fitted to a Mustang, with the brief to deliver repeatable track pace as well as sheer straight‑line speed. At its heart is the 5.2‑litre cross‑plane ‘Predator’ V8 with an Eaton TVS R2650 supercharger and charge‑cooling, rated at 760 hp (567 kW) and 625 lb ft (847 Nm). Independent tests put 0–60 mph at roughly 3.3 seconds, with an electronically limited 180 mph top speed. The 7‑speed Tremec TR‑9070 wet‑clutch DCT was calibrated for fast, consistent shifts and heat management on circuit as well as on road. Chassis hardware included MagneRide adaptive dampers, a limited‑slip differential, and Brembo brakes with 420 mm two‑piece front rotors. Aero and cooling were central to the package: a vented aluminium bonnet with removable rain tray, a functional front splitter, and extensive ducting for engine, transmission and brake cooling. Specification breadth came from options. The Handling Package added splitter wickers, a gurney flap and adjustable strut top mounts. The Carbon Fibre Track Package brought 20‑inch carbon‑fibre wheels (by Carbon Revolution), Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, an exposed‑carbon rear wing and further weight and aero gains. Recaro seats were available; SYNC 3 infotainment and a premium audio system featured depending on package. The GT500 was not officially sold in the UK; all local cars are left‑hand‑drive imports. In the US, the 2020 model year opened at $73,995 before options, with the Carbon Fibre Track Package listing at over $18,000. Our view is that the GT500’s significance lies in its combination of the most powerful factory Mustang engine to date with a serious, heat‑resilient DCT and chassis tuning that finally made a supercharged Shelby as credible on circuit as it is on the road. Hub summary: Final‑run S550 Shelby with 760 hp and a Tremec DCT; serious aero and options; LHD‑only imports for the UK.
